Here is a detailed review of some of the best smartwatches that will look great on your wrist.
APPLE WATCH SERIES 4
Apple’s September 2018 launched SERIES 4 is an excellent hit with Apple lovers. The smartwatch is “fundamentally redesigned” from its previous Series 3 smartwatch. The smartwatch retained its iconic rounded-square design but managed to increase the display by a whopping 30 percent!
The dial casing is 7mm thinner than its predecessor. The difference looks negligible unless tried on the wrist. It weighs only 48 grams in all!
Apple launched the Series 4 amidst huge fanfare in two different watch face sizes namely 40 mm and 44 mm. It uses the Watch OS 5 operating system and comes with Apple dual-core 64-bit processor. The display is 178 inches and has 448*368 pixel clarity. With 16 GB storage, it is the best that you can lay your hands on.
The company retained its digital crown feature on the side of the watch and it considerably improved ith haptic features. A long touch on the haptic crown can measure your heart rate and instantly send the ECG (Electronic Cardiogram) to your doctor. The feature proved to be saving quite a few lives.
The smartwatch is a boon for the mobility-challenged people. The innovative fall sensor gets activated once it detects no form of activity after discovering a fall. As an escalation, it triggers text messages in case there is no sequential motion detected for up to one minute. It vibrates and begins to emit progressively loud sounds and sends warning notifications to the emergency contacts stored in the watch.
It supports wireless technology in the form of Wi-Fi, Bluetooth (5.0), GPS, Glonass, and Galileo. The power of the sensors is worth 32 g force. With improved accelerometer, barometer, gyroscope, and sensors, it is a treat to work out or try extreme sports around you.
The watch is dust and shallow-water resistant with a rating of 50 meters with standardization of ISO 22810/2010. This means that the watch works in shallow-water activities like swimming in a pool. However, this is not for use in scuba diving, water skiing, or any other high-velocity water sport ejusdem generis.
The smartwatch is capable of making calls and receiving them even when the phone is close by. Siri is more efficient. Streaming music and podcasts is a beautiful experience in Series 4.
The smartwatch is compatible only with iPhone 6 or later models along with iOS 12 or afterward for GPS plus Cellular service. In case of GPS only, iPhone 5 or later that has iOS 12 or later works just fine. Honestly, my favorite!
APPLE WATCH SERIES 3:
Exactly one year earlier in Sept 2017, Apple launched its Series 3 Smartwatch which marked an improvement from its second-generation namely Series 2. It is easy to imagine the kind of excitement created at its launch event with pre-booking orders filling up pages even before the event started!
Series 3 weighs 52.8 grams in all and has a casing thickness of 11.4 millimeters. It works on Watch 4.0 Operating System and has an internal storage memory of 16 GB. The display is reasonably big at 1.65” with OLED touch screen that has 390 * 312 pixels clarity on its 42 inches watch face. The other model, which is 38 inches uses 272 * 340 pixels. Both models claim to handle 16 million colors.
Apple manages to keep its iconic square-faced OLED display intact right from its first model up till now. The shape not only emanates style but manages to look chic with almost anything worn along with.
Series 3 does not have a camera, video recorder and neither slots for microchips or USBs. The electronic sim is inbuilt in the phone saves a lot of space for the company to play along with its existing features and for creating newer space for adding some more winning ones.
The watch has a powerful dual-core processor and an equally powerful lithium-Ion battery that works fine one to one and half-day without having to run to the charger from time to time. The RAM is decent at 768 MB.
The watch introduced a new wireless chip packed within its excellent sapphire crystal glass that promised cellular connectivity along with GPS. A new wireless chip christened W2 makes Wi-Fi connectivity 85 percent faster and Bluetooth connection quicker and more efficient by at least fifty percent.
The barometer, altimeter, accelerometer and Siri Dictation, where it is capable of answering back with the help of a small wireless speaker at the back of the watch packed in a lot of attraction for Apple fans around the world. You bet that they went hysterical then.
While most of the outward features kept consistently the same, there is a marked improvement in performance and features from its previous generations, which is customary for a giant like Apple.
The apps can launch quickly, the graphics on the face are smooth, and the heart rate application is much more efficient. It measures the user’s heartbeat while resting, doing exercises and walking.
The Series 3 smartwatch is compatible with Apple iPhone 5 or later models with an iOS 11 or afterward. The Cellular service on Series 3 is compatible with iPhone 6 onwards with iOS11 or later.
Samsung Galaxy Watch:
For most of us, Samsung has been our first smartphone. And we know a lot of us to trust Samsung with the choice for their first smartwatch too.
Samsung has been close to Apple’s heels in launching newer models every other year and doing new campaigns. The giant leaders share the market and are dependant on their loyal customers. The Galaxy Watch launched by the company in September 2018 alongside Apple’s Series 4 at different events.
The galaxy watches launched in two models; namely a 46 mm model that comes in fashionable silver color and a 42 mm watch face model that comes in two colors, black and rose gold. The watch faces are analog display with Super AMOLED touchscreen fortified with Gorilla Dx plus glass.
The Gorilla glass is much more scratchproof and harder than sapphire glass. Samsung wanted this smartwatch to have a larger audience in contrast to its specific use sports models like its predecessor Galaxy Gear 2.
Gear 2 ideally meant for athletes only. But within months, a lot of its user’s voiced problems with its GPS and pacing accuracy. Due to which the company did not want to get stereotyped into making smartwatches only for sports activities.
With Galaxy, the brand attempted to create a watch that is more an everyday timepiece that will also handle fitness and sleep tracking along with all the other daily activities.
The smartwatch works on Tizen OS 4.0 and a dual-core Exynos processor of 1.15 GHz. The 46mm model features only Bluetooth connectivity and has a Ram of 768 MB with a decent 4 GB internal storage. The 46 mm model has LTE cellular connectivity with a 1.15 GB RAM and a storage capacity of 4 GB.
The improved battery life claims it can go on for several days without battery-draining scenarios. It is wirelessly charged and has powerful lithium-ion batteries of 472Ah and 270Ah for its 46 and 42 mm models respectively.
Outwardly, the design is much more similar to its Gear 2 model without a protruding and pronounced bezel. But some of the features such as efficient heart rate monitoring, ambient light sensors, accelerometer, gyroscope, and barometer are greatly enhanced.
The Heartrate monitor creates a baseline for heartbeat and pulse rate. The moment is realizing that the user’s heartbeat has become fast; it sends a prompt to relax.
Galaxy Watch creates the requisite ripples that it expected to. Its previous models were not able to compete ably with specialized sports smartwatches from Garmin and Apple. But this one has made quite some mark.
